# Why your trade website is slow - and what page speed costs a plumber or electrician

**4.9**10 reviews from trades

A website can look great on your office computer and still lose you jobs. If it crawls on a phone signal outside a customer's house, a lot of people will never see your number. Here is why sites get slow and what to do about it.

Most tradespeople check their own website on a decent broadband connection, where almost anything loads quickly. Your customers usually see it differently: on a phone, on 4G, often somewhere with a poor signal, and often in a hurry.

That gap is why so many trade websites feel fine to their owners and still underperform. This guide covers why sites get slow, what it really costs you, and the fixes that make the most difference.

## What a slow site costs a plumber or electrician

Speed is not a technical nicety. People who are kept waiting leave, and when they leave a trades website they go straight back to the search results and call someone else.

Think about what that means in jobs. If your site gets a few hundred visits a month and a slow homepage loses even a small share of them, that can easily be several enquiries a month going to a competitor. For an emergency plumber, or an electrician quoting for rewires, one lost job can be worth more than a year of hosting.

Google also takes page experience into account. Speed is not the only thing that decides your ranking, but a slow site does not help, and a faster competitor with similar pages has an edge.

## The bar to aim for

A useful target is for the main content of your page, the headline, the photo and your phone number, to appear in under about three seconds on an ordinary 4G connection. Faster is better. Much slower and you are losing people before they have read a word.

You can check this yourself with Google's PageSpeed Insights tool. Put in your homepage, look at the mobile result rather than desktop, and pay most attention to how long the largest item on the page takes to show.

Do not worry too much about chasing a perfect score. What matters is how quickly a real customer sees your headline and your phone number. A site that scores in the middle but shows the important parts straight away is in far better shape than one that scores well on desktop and stalls on a phone.

## Why trade websites get slow

In the sites we are asked to look at, the same causes come up again and again:

- Huge photos. A picture straight off a modern phone can be several megabytes. Uploaded as it is, one image can weigh more than the rest of the page put together.
- Heavy page builders and themes. Drag and drop tools often load a lot of code for features you never use.
- Too many plugins and add-ons. Chat widgets, sliders, pop-ups, review feeds and tracking scripts each add a little delay, and together they add a lot.
- Autoplay video. A background video on the homepage looks impressive on a big screen and drags on a phone.
- Cheap, crowded hosting. If your site shares a slow server with thousands of others, it will struggle at busy times.

None of these is a disaster on its own. The trouble is that they pile up. A slider here, a chat widget there and a batch of photos uploaded straight from the phone, and a site that was quick when it launched becomes slow without anyone noticing.

Heating Services Ltd: the service, the areas, the rating and two ways to get in touch, all on the first screen.

## Looking good versus loading fast

It is tempting to choose a website on looks alone. But a site that looks nicer and loads slowly will usually win fewer jobs than a plainer one that shows up straight away. A customer cannot be impressed by a design they gave up waiting for.

Think about who is looking. A homeowner with a leaking tank does not care about animations. They want to know you fix leaks, that you cover their area and how to call you. Everything else is a bonus at best.

The good news is that you rarely have to choose. A clean layout with one strong real photo, clear text and a visible phone number can look sharp and still be very quick. Most of the weight on slow sites comes from things customers do not need.

## The fixes that make the most difference

- Resize and compress every photo before it goes on the site, and use a modern format such as WebP.
- Load images further down the page only when someone scrolls to them.
- Remove plugins, sliders and scripts you do not really use.
- Swap autoplay video for a single good photo.
- Use hosting that serves your pages from close to your customers.
- Keep fonts to one or two families so the text appears straight away.

Some of these you can do yourself in an afternoon. Others depend on how your site was built. If it sits on a heavy theme, there may be a limit to how fast it can get without a rebuild.

## When a rebuild makes more sense

If your site is several years old, built on a page builder and still scoring badly on mobile after the obvious fixes, patching it can cost more than starting again. A site built to be light from the start, with speed checked before it goes live, avoids most of these problems for good.

Once it is fast, keep it that way. Make sure new photos are resized before they go up, and think twice before adding another widget. A quick check with PageSpeed Insights every few months will catch problems early.

Whichever route you take, test it on your own phone, on mobile data, standing outside. That is how your customers see it. If you would like us to look at your site and tell you honestly whether it needs fixing or replacing, send a Quick Quote request with your web address.
