Google Business Profile vs your website: where your next customer actually comes from

4.910 reviews from trades

Plenty of trades get calls from their Google Business Profile without a website at all. So is a site worth it? The honest answer is that the two do different jobs, and the businesses that grow tend to use both.

  • Had a website for six years that never brought in a job. Two months after the new one went live I was getting boiler and bathroom enquiries through the quote form most weeks.

    Dan M.Plumber, Croydon

  • They built separate pages for end of tenancy, office and domestic cleans, plus a page for each town we cover. We now show up in towns we never appeared in before.

    Sarah K.Cleaning company, Reading

  • Straight talking and quick, and they understood roofing jobs better than I expected. The site is fast on a phone and the emergency repairs page brings in calls at all hours.

    Lee W.Roofer, Guildford

  • I wanted more rewires and EICRs and fewer small call-outs. They built the whole site around those jobs, and that is mostly what comes in now.

    Mark T.Electrician, Bristol

  • Took a folder of phone photos and turned it into a gallery that sells the work for me. Customers mention the website when they ring now, which never used to happen.

    Gary P.Builder, Leeds

  • My Google profile was a mess. They sorted the categories, services and areas to match the new site, and the map listing started bringing in calls within a few weeks.

    Priya S.Heating engineer, Harrow

  • No jargon and no pushy upsells. You deal with the people building it, and they actually answer the phone. The site looks better than firms ten times our size.

    Tom R.Painter and decorator, Harrogate

  • Changes are a WhatsApp away. I sent photos of a new patio job on a Friday and they were on the site by Monday.

    Kev H.Landscaper, Chester

  • Hosting costs me nothing, which I did not believe until a full year went by without a bill. The site just works and I never have to log in to anything.

    Jamie L.Gas engineer, Enfield

  • Took a little longer than planned because I was slow sending photos, but the finished site is spot on, and enquiries arrive with the job and postcode already filled in.

    Chris B.Joiner, Sheffield

If you search for a plumber or electrician in your town, you will usually see a map with a few businesses under it before any normal search results. Those are Google Business Profiles, and for many trades they bring in a large share of new enquiries.

That leads a lot of tradespeople to ask a fair question. If the profile brings in the calls, why pay for a website? This guide explains what each one does, where customers really come from, and why they work best together.

Two tools doing two different jobs

Your Google Business Profile is a listing on Google's own platform. It shows your name, phone number, opening hours, reviews, photos and the area you serve. It appears in the map results and when someone searches for your business by name.

Your website is a place you own. It explains your services in detail, shows your work, answers questions and lets people get in touch. It can appear in the normal search results for a much wider range of searches.

Think of the profile as your sign on the high street and the website as the shop behind it. The sign gets people to notice you. The shop is where they decide to buy.

Where your Google Business Profile wins

For urgent, nearby searches such as "electrician near me", the map results often get the first look. A profile with recent reviews, real photos and the right categories can win calls straight from the search page, without the customer ever visiting a website.

It costs nothing, it is quick to update, and customers trust it because the reviews sit on Google rather than on your own site. Every trade business should have one, claimed, verified and kept up to date.

Photos matter more than many trades expect. A profile with regular, real photos of recent jobs looks far more active than one with a logo and a single old picture of the van.

The downside is that you do not control it. Google decides what it shows, changes the layout when it likes, and can suspend a listing with little warning. You also get very little space to explain what makes you worth choosing.

Where your website wins

A website lets you go into detail. You can have a page for each service and each town you want more work in, which lets you show up for searches the map results do not cover, such as "flat roof repair in Farnham" or "consumer unit upgrade cost".

It also does the persuading. Many customers who find you on the map tap through to your website before they call, especially for bigger jobs like a new boiler, a rewire or a roof. They want to see real photos of your work, read about how you price and check you cover their street. If there is no site, or it looks neglected, a lot of them go back and pick the next business.

Google also looks at your website when deciding how to rank your profile. A clear site that names your services and areas backs up what your profile says.

How the two work together

The strongest setup is simple. Your profile links to your website, and the website repeats the same business name, phone number and address or service area exactly. Your Google reviews are shown or linked on the site. Your service pages match the categories on your profile.

When everything lines up, Google has more confidence in you and customers get a consistent picture wherever they find you. That consistency is a big part of what we mean by building local search into a site from the start.

It helps to update both at the same time. If you add a new service, put it on your profile and give it a page on your site in the same week. If you change your number or your opening hours, change them everywhere at once. Small mismatches are easy to miss, and they chip away at trust.

Where Checkatrade and MyBuilder fit

Lead sites such as Checkatrade and MyBuilder can fill gaps in the diary, and many good trades use them. But it is worth being clear about what you are paying for. You are renting access to their audience, usually through membership or per-lead fees, and you are often competing with several other trades for the same job.

Your website and your Google profile are different. They are an audience you own. Every review, photo and page you add keeps working for you next month and next year, without paying again for each enquiry. Over time that owned audience compounds, and many trades find they can lean less on paid leads.

None of this means leaving the lead sites overnight. A sensible approach is to keep them while your own site and profile build up, then decide how much you still need them.

What to do next

  • Claim and verify your Google Business Profile if you have not already, and fill in every section.
  • Add real job photos to it regularly and reply to every review.
  • Make sure your website shows the same name, phone number and areas as your profile.
  • Build a page for each main service and each key town you cover.
  • Link your profile to the most relevant page on your site, not just the homepage if a better match exists.

If you want help with either one, ask for a Quick Quote and we will look at your profile and your website together, so they are set up to support each other.
